The Mother of All BBQs

Why do I call it the Mother of All BBQs.....because this thing is a huge event.

Every couple of years my family has a huge Potluck BBQ. We invite our neighbors and our friends. We usually get between 150 – 200 people throughout the course of the day. We start at 12 noon and finish at 12 am. Yes, it’s 12 hour party!!

It is a lot of work for the family but we enjoy it. Everyone that gets invited talks about it for years after. We have people from every nation along with dishes from their native country. We hire a DJ, we dance, we eat and we just enjoy each others company. We even have to rent a port-a-potty!! We even have a different theme every year. This year's theme was Red sox versus Yankees!!

Everyone that is invited has to bring something (price of entry). It can be food, beer, liquor, dessert, wine…but you have to bring something. We have such a tremendous variety of food at this event that it’s insane. The countries represented on the menu were: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Southern American, Italian, Syrian and a slew of others. The people were from every country too: DR, PR, Italy, Syria, Hondurans, Venezuela, Colombia, San Salvador, Peru, America, Cambodia, Ireland, Cuba and who knows what else. YES!! The United Nations right in Boston!

This year the 2 activities at the BBQ were Adult Musical Chairs and the 10 Bag Raffle. Both very big hits!! Of course the prizes were liquor: Absolut, Stoli, Brugal, Tequila and Pink X-Rated. Everyone was so enthusiastic about the prizes and hollered and screamed when there was a winner.

People come in from New York, Rhode Island and Dominican Republic just for this event.

This year a missing element at the BBQ was my Uncle Frank. He is our resident high energy cheerleader. We missed him terribly but we did not forget to include him in our festivities. He is off in Iraq, fighting the war. We taped a video sending him thanks and support. He has viewed it and told us how very happy he was to see this video.

This party has grown into something so big that every year The Committee (my mother) meets with the Planning Committtee (me!) to decide whether we are going to have it again. So far the consensus is that the next one is in 2010…but you never know…The Committee might want to party some more next year….we’ll see. If you are still on my good side….you might get an invitation to it. Don’t annoy me or I will take you off the list. LOL…..hey…it happens!
