The Power of Female Friendships!
They say there is strength in numbers … and I agree! When people get together and work toward a common goal, wonderful things happen. When women get together and work toward a common goal, magic happens. Don’t get me wrong, I love men and all their charms! Yet there is something about spending time with your girls that is special! Women understand each other! We can talk as much as we want for as long as we want and not have to worry about the other person not listening. Women don’t get flustered if someone starts crying! They grab the tissue and cry with you. They know exactly what to do! There is nothing like having a Girls Nite Out with your besties! It revives your spirits and make you feel like the world is perfect and all your problems are non-existent. You can talk about EVERYTHING! You can always count on your girls to support you, motivate you, encourage you, love you and make you feel like you can conquer the world. I am a member of such two women’s groups.
One is a formal group called Las Comadres (www.lascomadres.org) and the other is a less formal private group called Las Princesas. Each group has a specific purpose and mission.
My formal group is Las Comadres. Las Comadres’ vision is to empower women to be actively engaged in the growing Latino/Hispanic communities through online and face to face networks. Las Comadres’ mission is connecting and empowering Latinas everywhere through community building/networking, culture, learning, and technology. Las Comadres was formed by Dr. Nora Comstock. This group gives me many things among them access to professional & generous Latina women all over the world! Example: I will be taking a vacation soon and I sent a message to the Comadres network in my destination city asking for information on where to eat, dance and shop … and I got back a wealth of useful information! Who else can say they have a 15,000+ network of women ready to help them with any request? Comadres can do that!
Las Princesas is my informal private group. Our mission is to provide each other safe, comfortable “hanging out” space where we can spend time with our Latina friends. We provide each other an environment where we can feel empowered to pursue our personal and professional aspirations. This group was founded by two friends and they invited additional women to join. We do many different things together such as travel, educational workshops at the homes of members, we discuss life’s challenges and help each other get through them, we share our personal and professional goals and support each other to achieve them. A Princesa, like Machiavelli's “The Prince,” is a woman among women, a canny fighter, a steely sovereign. We take what we want out of life! As a group we rally behind a cause that we feel strongly about. We bounce ideas off of each other and we all love each other very much. Princesas is a place for us to exhale and feel safe! Membership has its privileges too! We are strong and when we need to, we flex our muscles to provide for our families and friends.
